Disney won’t screen ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ for critics groups

Disney is so paranoid about the plot of Star Wars: The Force Awakens being spoiled that the studio is ready to possibly hurt the film’s chances at Oscars. That’s because the film won’t be screened early for critics and will therefore be out of the races for several key critics group awards.

As TheWrap reported last week, the film will not be screened for any critics before the National Board of Review gets to unveil its annual Top 10 list on Dec. 1. It will also not be available for New York critics before the Dec. 2 New York Film Critics Circle awards or Los Angeles critics before the Dec. 6 Los Angeles Film Critics Association awards.

While it’s entirely possible that Star Wars: The Force Awakens would have been ignored by the Oscars anyway - as most films of its ilk usually are - some had speculated that it might be in the running for something more than the special effects Oscar if it becomes an acclaimed blockbuster.

Also, many films critics like don’t often get attention from the industry awards, but these critics awards usually are important steps to gain momentum before the Oscars.

And lastly, The Force Awakens is not be the only contender that critics won't get to see early. Since David O. Russell’s Joy and Alejandro G. Inarritu’s The Revenant never got screenings at festivals, it’s uncertain if those will be ready for critics at the beginning of December.

The Force Awakens opens on Dec. 18, meaning it will qualify for the Oscars anyway.
