David Ortiz of Red Sox to retire in 2016 (Report)

David Ortiz, who helped the Boston Red Sox win three World Series Championships, is reportedly planning to retire after the 2016 season.

The news was first reported by Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal, who only cited anonymous sources, on Twitter. The report has not been confirmed by the Red Sox and Ortiz has not tweeted about it.

The Boston Globe’s Peter Abraham did note that Ortiz made comments during the 2015 season that hinted that he might retire. He didn’t want a retirement tour like Derek Jeter, Abraham noted, but it looks like he’s going to get one anyway.

Ortiz’s 2016 season will be his 20th and he turns 40 tomorrow. He made his Major League debut with the Minnesota Twins in 1997 and has been with the Red Sox since 2003. He played a major role in Boston’s championships in 2004, 2007 and 2013 and has become one of the city’s most beloved sports figures. While he has never won the MVP award, he was named the 2013 World Series MVP and made nine All-Star games.

Ortiz has a career average of .284 and has 503 home runs, including 445 with the Sox. Although the Sox struggled through the 2015 season, Ortiz did end up with 37 homers and a .273 average.
