Billy Bob Thornton to star in ‘Bad Santa’ sequel with ‘Mean Girls’ director

Drunk Santa Claus is returning to the big screen with Billy Bob Thornton in the suit. Yes, a sequel to the cult pitch-black holiday comedy Bad Santa is happening, with Mean Girls director Mark Waters helming.

Miramax and Broad Green Pictures announced last week that they have greenlit the project. According to Deadline, the film will start production in January, with plans to have it ready by the 2016 holiday season.

On Monday, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that Waters was picked to direct Bad Santa 2. The script was written by Johnny Rosenthal, Doug Ellin and Shauna Cross. Waters and the producers are now looking for a female lead.

Bad Santa was released in 2003 and was directed by Terry Zwigoff with a script by Glenn Ficara and John Requa. Thornton earned a Golden Globe nomination for playing a drunk criminal who teams up with Tony Cox to steal malls blind during the holiday season while dressed as Old Saint Nick and an elf.

The original film also starred the late John Ritter and Bernie Mac in scene-stealing performances and it is sad that they won’t be able to take part in the sequel. Lauren Graham was the female lead, but it’s not clear if she’ll be back.

Thornton just starred in Our Brand Is Crisis with Sandra Bullock and has an Oscar for writing Sling Blade. He also won a Golden Globe earlier this year for his performance on Fargo.
