Top 10 Movie Soundtracks of 2011

4. The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross
David Fincher called upon his reliable, former-NIN collaborators for the second consecutive time to score his big screen adaptation of the bestselling novel by Stieg Larsson. The first installment of the three book Millennium Trilogy was already made in Sweden and released in American in 2010, but Fincher's remake was one of the most highly anticipated movies of 2011, especially because the director was coming off two Best Director/Best Picture nominated films in a row: 2008's The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and 2010's The Social Network. Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, who won the Oscar last year for their awesomely simplistic, yet very edgy, score for The Social Network bring the biting cold and gritty darkness of this film's setting to life through an eerily jarring score. The dystopian feel that is familiar to Reznor's NIN work is very present here. The violent and graphic nature of the film's story is perfectly mirrored through Reznor and Ross' work. The duo also have the amazing ability to quickly change tempos throughout music tracks, or incorporate angelic vocals along with bleak, monophonic sounds and melodies, as well as mix a strange combination of music effects together refueling the idea of lost innocence and hidden truths that string together the film's intricate plot. Like with The Social Network, Reznor and Ross have composed a soundtrack that paints the only picture it is supposed to; the tracks created for this film will never be able to be borrowed for future use in films or even trailers because they have a distinct feeling and aura about them that can only relate to this singular film. They even dared to cover Led Zeppelin's classic, "Immigrant Song," with Karen O. of The Yeah Yeah Yeahs covering for Robert Plant - it's a fantastic opening credits song. It may not reach the success of their work in 2010, but their follow up soundtrack is still one of 2011's best.
