5. Contagion, Cliff Martinez
Even though it is standard for Steven Soderbergh to feature funky original scores in his films, it is uncommon for a disaster movie to feature a synthesizer heavy soundtrack with every song sounding like it is the build up before the drop in a dubstep song. However, Soderbergh is one of the more creative and ambitious filmmakers working today (until next year when he "retires") so Martinez's retro-poppy score floods all 106 minutes of his catastrophic, disease-kills-all thriller, Contagion is a very different musical approach. Martinez got his start as a composer thanks to Soderbergh when they collaborated on Soderbergh's breakthrough indie, sex, lies, and videotape. Martinez has since progressed to scoring almost all of Soderbergh's films but has also worked with other directors like Nicolas Winding Refn and Joe Carnahan. His synth grooves are creatively original and are different in every new film he scores. He manages to keep his individual music style while never becoming repetitive. It's really great to see a feeling for music different from the more famous film scorers like John Williams, Hans Zimmer, and James Newton Howard who are all great at what they do but have forced aspiring composers to develop distinguishing nuances. Martinez has become one of my new favorite composers and I look forward to his upcoming projects following both Contagion and the other soundtrack he has on this list (keep reading).
