8. We Need to Talk About Kevin Jonny Greenwood
School shootings are a touchy subject, so maybe that was why The Academy of Motion Pictures, Arts & Sciences decided to completely snub this heart wrenching film about a mother who's son goes on a vicious school killing spree. This Lynne Ramsey directed feature starred Tilda Swinton in one of the year's most powerful performances, and easily the best female role of the year, but failed to pick up a single Oscar nomination. The film's prickly score, composed by Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood, is eerie and frightening as it weaves through every scene. Kevin is a visually heavy film but also an intense character study of the kind of parent that every childrearing couple is afraid of becoming and Greenwood completely encapsulates the depressionist and fearful tone of the film in his overarching score. Kevin is no easy viewing experience, thanks in part to Greenwood's (who also composed the score for P.T. Anderson's There Will Be Blood) painfully beautiful score.
