9. Hanna, The Chemical Brothers
Following in the footsteps of Daft Punk and Trent Reznor, the duo of Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons create an atmospheric score that is individual, original, and completely separated from any other contemporary score. It's a hard edged album of both sublime and subversive music that would not seem to fit any kind of film upon an initial listen, but when viewing Hanna, which follows a 14-year-old girl named Hanna (Saoirse Ronan) who was trained by her father (Eric Bana) to become the perfect fighting and killing machine but is closely tracked by a CIA agent (Cate Blanchett) assigned to take her down, the soundtrack matches the film precisely. Moments of calm that are interspersed with intense and beautifully choreographed fight scenes or briskly edited car chases each have their own perfectly conceived piece of music. Hanna was a well received film released in the spring of 2011 that took in a $10 million profit. Not horrible, but not enough when the film has an all star cast and is directed by Joe Wright (Atonement, Pride and Prejudice). However, the film had one of the year's best original scores and as a standalone piece of work from The Chemical Brothers, it's another fine addition to their repertoire.
