10. War Horse, John Williams
This passion project/epic directed by Steven Spielberg based on the Tony Award-winning play was one of the most highly awaited films of the year. As one of the greatest American directors, it is not uncommon to expect amazing things from a Spielberg film, especially when it is either a war film, period piece, or science fiction film. Spielberg has directed many benchmark movies in each of those genres, and War Horse was both a war film and period piece. A nearly two-and-a-half hour film chronicling the journey of a little horse, Joey, who witnesses the power and might of World War I from a number of different vantage points, changing hands and gaining new experiences almost ever 20-30 minutes (of film time). To score his newest film (which was nominated for six Academy Awards including Best Picture), Spielberg called upon his frequent collaborator, John Williams. As one of the greatest, and probably most reliable and consistent, film composers working today, Williams composed a moving orchestration mirroring the breathtaking locations and mileage that this film covers. There may not be a memorable track or theme that comes out of War Horse, like other films Williams has scored, but the soundtrack is definitely one of the more positive elements of this film. An epic score for an epic film. Though War Horse was criticized for being over-sentimental and failing to accomplish what previous Spielberg outings like Schindler's List or Saving Private Ryan did, War Horse is still a fine Spielberg film with all the classic Spielbergian aspects, including a nicely composed score from John Williams.
