Once the election day totals were in, it was clear that the nation had picked Samuel Tilden over Rutherford B. Hayes as its choice for president. Tilden had won the popular vote and led by 19 electoral votes; he needed just one of the remaining 20 undecided electors to pull for him. A committee of 15 top officials was convened to award the disputed votes. Hayes was a Republican; Tilden, a Democrat. The committee had eight Republicans and seven Democrats. You can do the math. Sure enough, Hayes was declared winner just two days prior to inauguration.
