The most recently completed campaign, which ended in the historic election of Barack Obama, also happened to be the longest and the most expensive to date.

On the Democratic side, Obama and Hillary Clinton duked it out in what Jon Stewart referred to as "The Long, Flat, Seemingly Endless Bataan Death March to the White House," while a seemingly endless parade of Republican candidates soon consolidated into a candidacy for Arizona Senator John McCain.

But just when it seemed like the race had crystallized to the point of normality, Sarah Palin arrived on the scene as McCain's nominee for VP. Unintentional hilarity ensued, as demonstrated in the video below.
