When the dust cleared after this election, no candidate had enough electoral votes, so the House of Representatives decided as per Constitutional direction. Improbably, the fate of the nation came down to one single man: Stephen Van Rensselaer, whose vote would decide the fate of New York's delegation and, in turn, the election. How did he choose? By closing his eyes and letting fate guide him to whatever name he saw when he opened his eyes, of course. Seriously. John Quincy Adams was the beneficiary.
