Everyone knows how this one ended: Abraham Lincoln became president and guided the nation through the Civil War, one of the most trying times in American history. In fact, Lincoln wasn't even on the ballot in the south, and four candidates--Lincoln, Stephen Douglas, John Bell, and John Breckinridge--garnered significant vote totals.
Popular joke of the time:
First Boy— "'S your father goin' to run for President this year?"
Second Boy—"Guess so; he says he may as well—everybody else is doin' it."
And if you believe in extreme revisionist history, then Lincoln's victory was even more remarkable.
