7. Where the Wild Things Are (1963) – Sendak’s most popular work about a feisty boy named Max who’s sent to bed without supper and dreams of a world of monsters who threaten to eat him. Staring them down, the monsters instead become afraid of Max and make him their king. The four-time award winning story was made into an animated short in 1973, an opera in 1980, and a full-length feature film in 2009. “Let the wild rumpus begin!”
