“Nobody Loves You (When You’re Down And Out),” Walls and Bridges, 1974
Ever since I first heard this song, I was convinced that this was the best song Lennon ever wrote. To me, it is an ironic song because so much of it has become true. “Everybody loves you when you’re six-foot in the ground,” the song ends with. I feel like Lennon was hoping that this would not happen to him and that he would live to see the world, which had done so many horrible things to him in his life, would grow to love him. Of course, that didn’t happen, though, and Lennon predicts his own legacy.
