6. A Star Is Born - George Cukor, 1954
While the ‘Arthur Freed Unit’ at MGM dominated the musical in the ‘50s with An American in Paris, Singin’ In The Rain and Gigi, the best were the ones that took some risks, and Freed rarely took those. So, it left the window open for Samuel Goldwyn or Jack L. Warner, who produced some of the great musicals that matched interesting subject matter with interesting actors. A Star Is Born was made over at Warner and was Judy Garland’s return to cinema. One of the great injustices of Hollywood was Garland not receiving the Oscar for her role. She and James Mason were the most tragic lovers ever put on film, but neither received the attention they deserved. “The Man That Got Away” is very possibly Garland’s finest hour.
