“Shambala” was written by Daniel Moore and covered by Three Dog Night in 1973. It was sung by lead vocalist Cory Wells. Their version reached #3 in both the pop singles and adult contemporary categories at Billboard. It later appeared on the band’s ninth album, Cyan. Another version of the song was also released in 1973, one week earlier than Three Dog Night’s, by Texas singer B.W. Stevenson. His version was considered country pop. It peaked at #66 in the U.S., but out-ranked Three Dog Night’s version in South Africa, hitting #8 compared to Three Dog Night’s #13. The song is about a mythical kingdom mentioned in ancient texts of Tibetan Buddhism and the Kalachakra Tantra. It is said to be located within or beyond the Himalayas.
The song has appeared in numerous movies and television shows. One of my favorite uses of the song was in the TV series Lost, when Hurley found the old, beat-up Volkswagen bus in the middle of nowhere and he, Charlie, Sawyer and Jin recklessly but victoriously got it started.
