9. Patton - Directed by Franklin J. Schaffner (1970, Won 7 Oscars)
Patton is an intense and complete biopic of the controversial American general, George S. Patton, Jr., during his command in World War II. This nearly three hour character study was scripted by Francis Ford Coppola (who won an Oscar for the screenplay) and stars the mesmerizing George C. Scott in the titular role. The film's scope is vast for it condenses one man's legendary military career into roughly 180 minutes without any rough misstep or pacing issue. Schaffner's direction is excellent (he too won an Oscar as director) and is the backbone to the film's inability to bore viewers, strengthened by Scott's captivating presence on screen. The film is considered one of the best war films, as well as biopics, ever made. It also possesses a bit of controversy regarding George C. Scott's infamous rejection of his Best Actor Oscar for he refused to be in competition with other actors. Regardless, the film is brilliant and Scott's performance is one of the best ever.
