10. West Side Story - Directed by Robert Wise (1961, Won 10 Oscars)
This fantastic movie musical co-directed by Wise and choreographer Jerome Robbins is an intelligent adaptation and modernized take on Romeo and Juliet. Before Franco Zeffirelli presented the story in its original format in the late 1960s and before Baz Luhrmann told the familiar tale in a chaotic fashion during the mid-90s, West Side Story replaces the Montagues and the Capulets with two rival NYC gangs: The Jets and the Sharks. The dueling gangs are as violent and destructive as they are musically talented and technically trained in dance. This moving musical features an outstanding score (it was the biggest selling soundtrack for the time) and vigorous original choreography, as well as engaging performances from Natalie Wood, Richard Beymer, Russ Tamblyn, Rita Moreno, and George Chakiris (the last two won Oscars for their portrayals of Anita and Bernardo, respectively). It's a beautiful film that gracefully adopts the Shakespearean framework and perfectly places it within a contemporary time period with sweeping music.
