2. The Godfather - Directed by Francis Ford Coppola (1972, Won 3 Oscars)
This may seem like a clichéd choice, but there is so very little wrong with this film. Its depiction of era, acting, directing, script (adapted by Francis Ford Coppola and novel scribe Mario Puzo), etc. are all amazing The Godfather is one of the three classic, benchmark American films along with Casablanca and Citizen Kane and because of its Best Picture win in 1972, it's the only one of the those three that falls in the 1961-2010 category. It's not my favorite film, nor will it be in my top 10 or 20 of all time, it might not even scrape my top 30, but there is no denying that The Godfather is a damn good film technically and aesthetically and is clearly Francis Ford Coppola's masterpiece. A defining film of all cinema, let alone American cinema, with a timeless quality that will make it beloved for generations to come. The merits of The Godfather need very little explaining, it's an accomplishment that never loses its charm or watchability. It's one of the bonafide Best Picture winners that everybody has seen, knows about, or, at least, has heard of.
