3. The Departed - Directed by Martin Scorsese (2006, Won 4 Oscars)
To call this Martin Scorsese's opus wouldn't be completely truthful. It was the only film of his that won Best Picture and the only time that the legendary filmmaker won Best Director, but it is not the director's best film by any means. After a 45 year career, that included classics like Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, and Goodfellas, a gritty cops 'n' criminals drama set in Boston was what finally granted the hyper, Italian-American director the long sought after award. Even though he deserved it many years prior, The Departed is still an amazing film amidst an incredible body of work. It's a long film that moves at a rapid pace with brisk editing and precise direction, never wasting a moment or including a shot or sequence that doesn't belong. Every moment of this film plays a key role in the climactic developments which allows for an entertaining and engaging film that never risks becoming dull. Add a stacked ensemble cast with the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, Martin Sheen, Vera Farmiga, Alec Baldwin, and Mark Wahlberg (in the best role of his career, thus far, that awarded him an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor) along with top notch script filled with memorable lines and fantastic deliveries all scored to classic Scorsese tunes from The Human Beinz, Van Morrison, and The Rolling Stones. Scorsese has directed numerous classics and, as more time comes to pass, The Departed will nicely rank along with his finer, older films. It's not his best film, but its better than most filmmakers could produce and as a result of it being Scorsese's only Best Picture winning film...ever...it's one the best winners in recent years.
