4. Forrest Gump - Directed by Robert Zemeckis (1994, Won 6 Oscars)
People will argue all they want. Both The Shawshank Redemption and Pulp Fiction were beat out by this whimsical dramedy about a mentally challenged man, named Forrest (Tom Hanks), who lives an extraordinary life by experiencing major historical events first hand and watching it all go by, without a care in the world, with only thoughts of finally being able to be with his childhood love, Jenny (Robin Wright). Sure, both Shawshank and Pulp Fiction are awesome, but Forrest Gump is the more magical movie. It's a creative story with a perfectly melodramatic script, thanks to writer Eric Roth, and great performances. Hanks, Wright, Sally Field, and Gary Sinise comprise the fine cast that literally fall through important historical events of the 20th Century while Forrest struggles to find Jenny. It's beautifully conceived and finely directed by Zemeckis. People will argue forever about the winners of the 1994 Oscars, but there is a simple reason for why it played out the way it did: Everyone loves Forrest Gump because it's just so hard to hate.
