5. American Beauty - Directed by Sam Mendes (1999, Won 5 Oscars)
One of the best written movies of all times, Sam Mendes' American Beauty is a window into the repugnance of suburban life. It strives to uproot all myths about ideal suburban living, like taking the domestic sitcoms of the 1950s and slapping them all with a reality stick. This gorgeous dramedy stars Kevin Spacey as a depressed father who, while enduring a mid-life crisis, decides to turn his life around and add some layers of excitement while also growing increasingly more attracted to his teenage daughter's best friend. It's dark, eerily sexual, very suggestive, emotional, and very funny. Alan Ball's brilliant screenplay (which won Best Original Screenplay) is simply one of the finest ever written, and hand it to surprise breakout Sam Mendes who handles Ball's material delicately, but in an undeniably effective fashion. This was Mendes' first film and he was awarded Best Director. American Beauty is a quirky and original suburban comedy that knows exactly what its doing from its eyebrow-raising opening narration to its concise ending monologue, all scored by Thomas Newman's awesome, Oscar-nominated soundtrack.
