Tom Hiddleston’s Hank Williams biopic ‘I Saw The Light’ kicked out of 2015 Oscar race

Tom Hiddleston will not be in the awards discussion this year after all. The actor’s I Saw The Light, in which he plays the tragic country music legend Hank Williams, has been delayed until next year.

Sony Pictures Classic’s decision is a bit unsurprising since the film earned mixed reviews following its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. However, SPC co-president Tom Bernard told Deadline that this has nothing to do with it.

Bernard said the real reason is because it will be hard for Hiddleston to promote the film in person, since he’s still promoting Crimson Peak and will soon start filming Kong: Skull Island.

I Saw The Light was originally scheduled to hit theaters on Nov. 28, but it now will not be released until March 25, 2016. That will put it up against My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. The film will first open in New York, Los Angeles and Nashville before going wide the following week.

SPC picked up the film in April and Elizabeth Olsen co-stars as Williams’ wife, Audrey. The first still from the film was released in August. Hiddleston not only looks the part, but also performed Williams’ songs in the film.

I Saw The Light was directed by Marc Abraham and is based on the Hank Williams biography by Colin Escott, George Merritt, and William MacEwen.
