New York help wanted ad for health care workers says ‘No Haitians’ apply

A help wanted ad for a health care worker in Rockland County, New York has raised eyebrows on the web for clearly insisting that “No Haitians” need apply for the job. The company that took out the ad in a local Pennysaver, Interim HealthCare has profusely apologized for it.

The ad is filled with typos, but that didn’t excuse the mistake. According to The New York Daily News, the ad appeared in the Oct. 15 issue of the New City Pennysaver and read, “Laid back nurse, no haitians, must have strong respiratory mngt.”

The ad was placed by Interim HealthCare and calls for a nurse in West Haverstraw. It was noticed on the web and inspired a Change.org petition. State Senator David Carlucci has called out Interim HealthCare on Twitter and even held a press conference with the Haitian American Nurses Association.

Interim HealthCare President Katherine McNally went to Facebook and called the ad “totally unacceptable” and “offensive.”

“I can assure you that we take this seriously. We have engaged an independent third party to conduct a comprehensive review of what occurred. All policies and procedures will be reviewed to assure that it will never happen again,” McNally wrote. “We have already taken action and will continue to do so. Please accept our sincere apology. In particular, we apologize to the entire Haitian community.”
