NBC cuts episode count for America Ferrera's ‘Superstore,’ Eva Longoria’s ‘Hot & Bothered’

NBC only debuted one new sitcom this fall and had two in the bank for midseason. While it looks like the fall one could end up being cancelled at any minute, the two in the on-deck circle have already been trimmed.

The two midseason comedies are Hot and Bothered, which is the long-awaited return to television for Eva Longoria, and ensemble workplace comedy Superstore with Ugly Betty’s America Ferrera and Mad Men’s Ben Feldman.

According to Variety, both of the shows had their 13-episode orders cut to 11. The site’s sources say that the two shows have not finished filming yet and NBC realized that it would have been hard to squeeze all 13 episodes into midseason.

Deadline reports that NBC executives are also considering keeping shows’ runs all original during the season and they think 10 or 11 episodes will be enough to help them determine how well a show is going with viewers.

NBC was once a storied home for comedy, but now its comedy line-up is in shambles. Truth Be Told with Mark-Paul Gosselaar is its only new fall sitcom and is paired with the all-live Undateable on Fridays. It’s the only block of comedy the network has all fall.

In addition to Superstore and Hot & Bothered, NBC also had a Coach revival set to go for midseason, but that was killed before airing.

On the drama side, NBC has Jennifer Lopez’s Shades of Blue, Game of Silence and Heartbreaker ready for midseason as well.
