Last Week Tonight host John Oliver decided to take a different look at the shooting in Roseburg, Oregon. Rather than do a segment on gun control as some might have expected, he did a segment on mental health.
Oliver told his viewers that this was actually the worst time to bring up mental health and noted that Republicans like Donald Trump, Ben Carson and Mike Huckabee were only bringing it up to avoid talking about guns. The comedian even cited statistics that show that “adults with mental illnesses were more likely to be victims than perpetrators of community violence.”
Still, Oliver said that it is still time to start talking about mental illness and to change how we treat it. He then challenged those politicians who say that mental illness is a major issue to actually do something about it.
Oliver’s comments followed the shooting at the Umpqua Community College in Roseburg last week. A gunman killed nine people, then took his own life.
