Jennifer Lawrence on making less than male co-stars: 'I failed as a negotiator'

Jennifer Lawrence has penned an essay about making less money than her male co-stars in American Hustle for Lena Dunham’s Lenny newsletter this week.

Lawrence only found out what her co-stars, Bradley Cooper, Christian Bale and Jeremy Renner, made when the Sony leaks hit the internet and suffice to say, she wasn’t happy. She clarified she wasn't mad at Sony, instead she was mad at herself.

She admitted in the letter titled "Why Do These Dudes Make More Than Me?" that she didn’t want to come across as “spoiled” or “difficult” when negotiating her salary, however, she has since had a change of heart.

“At the time, that seemed like a fine idea,” she wrote about being less assertive than she probably should’ve been, "until I saw the payroll on the Internet and realized every man I was working with definitely didn't worry about being 'difficult' or 'spoiled.'"

Lawrence now admits she "failed as a negotiator,” adding, “I'm over trying to find the 'adorable' way to state my opinion and still be likable. F--- that."

The Sony hack revealed Lawrence and the other female lead, Amy Adams, only received seven percent of back-end profits of American Hustle, compared the male leads’ nine percent.

"Jeremy Renner, Christian Bale and Bradley Cooper all fought and succeeded in negotiating powerful deals for themselves," she continued. "If anything, I'm sure they were commended for being fierce and tactical, while I was busy worrying about coming across as a brat and not getting my fair share."
