Eddie Murphy tells jokes, does Bill Cosby impression at Mark Twain prize ceremony

Eddie Murphy told a joke on Sunday. Sure, that doesn’t sound like a big deal, but it was his first joke on stage in 28 years. The comedian performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC when he received his Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.

Murphy hadn’t performed on a stage since he moved on from standup in the late 1980s. But last night, he told a few jokes and even performed a Bill Cosby impression. He was asked to do one on the Saturday Night Live 40th Anniversary special in February, but decided not to. Clearly, things have changed for him in the past few months.

The Washington Post reports that Murphy joked about how Cosby also received a Mark Twain prize. “Bill has one of these. Did y’all make him give it back?” Murphy joked. He also impersonated Cosby, wondering what a performance from Cosby would be like.

“I would like to talk to some of the people who feel like I should give back my motherf***ing trophies,” Murphy said as Cosby.

The Associated Press notes that Murphy used his “Pudding Pop” voice, recalling his famous 1987 special Eddie Murphy Raw. “You may have heard recently that I allegedly put the pill in the people's stomach,” Murphy joked. “If I ever see or meet this Hannibal Buress in person I am going to try and kill this man!”

The tribute to Murphy will air on PBS on Nov. 23. You can see a bit of Murphy’s performance in the following AP video.
