The Gotham Independent Film Awards nominations were announced this morning, honoring the best in indie filmmaking. The Diary of a Teenage Girl surprisingly lead the pack, beating out Oscar favorite Carol with four nominations. Carol and Tangerine followed with three nods each.
The race for best feature includes Todd Haynes’ Carol, Marielle Heller’s The Diary of a Teenage Girl, Josh and Benny Safdie’s Heaven Knows What, Tom McCarthy’s Spotlight and Sean Baker’s Tangerine. Baker’s film is noteworthy because the entire project was shot using an iPhone.
According to Variety, the other three nods for Diary came for Bingham Ray Breakthrough Director Award for Heller; Best Screenplay for Heller; and Best Actress for Bel Powley.
Carol’s three nominations came for Best Feature, Best Screenplay for Phyllis Nagy, and Best Actress for Cate Blanchett. Tangerine’s nominations are for Breakthrough Actor for Kitana Kiki Rodriguez and Mya Taylor and Best Feature.
The 25th annual Gotham Independent Film Awards are presented by the Independent Film Project and will be handed out on Nov. 30 at Cipriani Wall Street.
