Bruce Hyde, a professor at St. Cloud State University in Minnesota, has died at age 74. Hyde was a former actor, famous for appearing in two classic early Star Trek episodes.

Hyde died at a hospice on Oct. 13 after a battle from throat cancer, the St. Cloud Times reports. His wife, Susan Saetre, said that he was not able to talk, but would use a white board to correct hospice staffers’ grammar during his final days.
The Dallas native was a busy actor during the 1960s, notes The Hollywood Reporter. Although he appeared in several television shows during that decade, his two Trek performances mean that he’s a part of pop culture lore.
Hyde first appeared in “The Naked Time,” Star Trek’s fourth episode as Riley. He’s also in episode 13, “The Conscience of the King,” He famously sang “I’ll Take You Home Again, Kathleen” on the show. The character never appeared in another Trek episode, but Hyde would still attend Trek events.
After acting, Hyde received a master’s degree in communication studies and a doctorate in rhetoric. He had been a member of the St. Cloud State faculty since 1990.
“He lived such a full life. He made a difference for everybody,” Saetre told CNN.
