Box office: Matt Damon’s ‘The Martian’ dominates, ‘Hotel Transylvania 2’ holds on strong

Audiences has space on the brain this weekend, with Ridley Scott’s The Martian taking the top spot at the box office this weekend. While many had expected it to pass Gravity’s mark for the all-time October opening, the film fell just shy of the mark.

20th Century Fox’s The Martian, which stars Matt Damon as the titular astronaut stuck on Mars, grossed $55 million from 3,831 locations. According to Box Office Mojo, that number means that it was just $785,112 away from matching the record Gravity set in 2013.

Amazingly, The Martian (reviewed here) actually made all that money without being screened in IMAX, unlike Gravity, and is also a much longer film. All IMAX screens this weekend were occupied by Robert Zemeckis’ The Walk.

This was the second-best opening for Damon, coming in behind The Bourne Ultimatum’s $69.2 million opening.

Coming in second was last weekend’s champion, Sony’s Hotel Transylvania 2. The movie took in $33 million in its second weekend, bringing its total to $90.5 million. According to Exhibitor Relations, the film dropped just 32 percent from its opening weekend.

Coming in third was the Emily Blunt-starring thriller Sicario (reviewed here). The Lionsgate release made $12 million in its first week in theaters nationwide. Overall, the film has made $15 million so far.

Warner Bros.’ The Intern also held on well with $11.6 million in its second weekend. Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials was in fifth with $7.6 million.

The Walk, which is being released by Sony, only made $1.5 million from 448 IMAX screens. The movie hits all theaters this weekend.
