3. 157 Riverside Avenue
REO’s innate ability to deliver some great rock and roll is shown in this 1985 performance of “157 Riverside Avenue” at the Rock am Ring festival in Mendig, Germany. This song was written by the original five members of REO Speedwagon, which included Gary Richrath, but not Kevin Cronin. Terry Luttrell was the first lead vocalist. The song was originally released in 1971. It ran 3:57. Kevin Cronin became lead vocalist for REO’s 1972 album, R.E.O./T.W.O., but left the band following that release. He returned as lead vocalist in 1976 and has remained lead vocalist since. With Cronin as lead vocalist, the band went on to stretch the song to as long as 12:22 and included piano and guitar solos as well as a bit of storytelling and a call and response passage with Cronin scatting to Richrath, and Richrath responding with his guitar. Now that’s entertainment! This particular performance runs 9:58 and is worth every second spent viewing/listening to it.
