2. Number The Stars
This 1990 story by Lois Lowry won a Newberry award and tells the story of a young girl who helps save her best friend and her family during WWII in Denmark during the Nazi invasion. I read this as a child and I remember that I really enjoyed the book and didn’t want to put it down. This story is geared toward children as young as 10 and it is a remarkable story that I remembered even as I got older.
