Now that Patrick Dempsey has all this free time on his hands after 10 years on Grey’s Anatomy, he’s got to figure out what to do next. Well, the first thing will be starring in Bridget Jones’s Baby, the long-gestating third film in the Renee Zellweger-starring romcom franchise.
The casting was first reported by Deadline and also confirmed by TheWrap.
Dempsey could be replacing Hugh Grant as a second romantic interest for Bridget Jones, since Grant is not involved in the new film. Working Title claimed that Grant was still involved in 2012, but it looks like he really has left it. Colin Firth will still be involved as Mark Darcy.
Sharon Maguire, who directed the original 2001 hit Bridget Jones’s Diary, will be helming the new film. The follow-up film, Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, was directed by Beeban Kidron.
The plot for Baby will be based on columns author Helen Fielding wrote, not her most recent novel, Mad About The Boy. The script was penned by Fielding, with David Nicholls (One Day) working on it more recently.
Working Title is producing the film with Universal Pictures financing and distributing.
Since Dempsey has been busy with Grey’s in recent years, Baby will be his first movie since 2011’s Transformers: Dark of the Moon.
