The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences have found their replacements for Neil Meron and Craig Zadan. Emmy winning producer David Hill and Oscar nominated producer Reginald Hudlin will put together the 88th Academy Awards ceremony.
The Academy announced the decision this afternoon.
Hill is a veteran of Fox, having won an Emmy for Outstanding Live Sports Special as an executive producer on the 2011 World Series. He was most recently 21st Century Fox senior executive vice president and was the CEO of Fox Sports Media Group.
Hudlin was nominated for an Oscar as a producer on the 2012 Best Picture nominee Django Unchained. He also has an extensive TV resume, having directed episodes of Modern Family, The Office and New Girl. From 2005-2009, Hudlin was the former President of Entertainment for BET Networks. He’s already a member of AMPAS.
“We’re delighted to have this talented team on board,” Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs said in a statement. “David is a true innovator with a dynamic personality. His vast experience as a live events producer, coupled with Reggie’s energy, creativity and talent as a filmmaker, is sure to make this year’s Oscar telecast a memorable one.”
Hopefully, Hedlin and Hill can move the Oscars beyond the recent obsession with musicals. While we have nothing against musicals, Meron and Zadan’s obsession with the genre made their three consecutive ceremonies incredibly long. The two confirmed in March that they will not be back for another go-round.
The Oscars season is really starting to heat up with the summer done. Last week, AMPAS announced that Debbie Reynolds, Gena Rowlands and Spike Lee will receive Honorary Oscars.
The 88th Oscars are set for Feb. 28.
