'Once Upon a Time' Season 4 in review

Frozen and The Snow Queen

The writers of Once Upon a Time coupled Frozen, a story based on Hans Christian Anderson’s The Snow Queen, and the character of the Snow Queen in a unique way. Elsa finds herself in Storybrooke after being accidentally released from the urn that followed Hook and Emma back from the past. Scared and alone, Elsa wreaked havoc on Storybrooke, more than she actually intended. It was all because she desperately wanted to find her sister, Anna.

It turns out that Elsa somehow inherited her powers as did her aunt Ingrid, the Snow Queen. Ingrid, who had a bad run of things with her family, spent years looking to create a new family for herself. Elsa (her real niece) was part of that plan. Emma, who is like them, because she also wields magic, became part of the plan.

Ingrid devised the spell of shattered sight as a way to wipe out Storybrooke, leaving Emma, Elsa, and herself to live in sisterhood happily ever after. Her plan didn’t quite work. Elsa found Anna and together with Emma they were able to overcome the Snow Queen. They helped her realize that her real sisters did love her, which led to her realizing the gravity of her actions. Ingrid then recalled the spell. She knew it would be the end of her, but it also meant she would get to be with her sisters again.
