Regina’s story
In many ways, season 4 was Regina’s story. Season 3 ended with her defeating Zelena by using light magic. However, the return of Marian made most of us nervous. We feared (or for those who like a little evil, hoped) that Regina would turn to the darkness in an attempt to remove Marian from the equation and secure her happy ending with Robin.
She passed the test, though. She passed it time and time again. She saved Marian from the snow monster, worked relentlessly to find a way to save her from the Snow Queen’s curse, and chose her survival over being with Robin. Regina really proved herself a changed woman.
The second half of the season presented it’s own temptations too. In Regina’s attempt to have the author write her a happy ending, she crossed paths with the other Queens of Darkness who wanted their happy endings as well. The only problem was that in order to gain their trust, she had to convince them that she was still the Evil Queen.
It was a tense situation that many feared may lead to the undoing of her redemption, but they were wrong again.
When she found the author, and had the opportunity to erase Zelena from the book, she thought better of it. She even realized that Robin was not her happy ending, just part of it.
Even in the finale, she was the light the darkness first sought to snuff out. Now it seems that season 5 will be a continuation of her redemption story. It is theorized that Regina will become the new savior in their quest to free Emma from the darkness.
