‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ named best film by international film critics group FIPRESCI

The awards season hasn’t even technically started yet and George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road is already picking up some hardware. The film was named the best film of the past 12 months by the International Federation of Film Critics, also known as FIPRESCI.

The FIPRESCI Grand Prix will be presented to Miller at the San Sebastian Film Festival in Spain on Sept. 18.

“You could have knocked me over with a feather! It's lovely to have this great cohort of critics acknowledge our collective labours in this way,” Miller said in a statement.

FIPRESCI is a group of 493 film critics from around the world. Their prize goes to any film that has premiered since July 2014, which explains why they can give a prize in September. Aside from Fury Road, the other finalists for the top prize were Hou Hsiao-Hsien’s The Assassin, Laszlo Nemes’ Son of Saul and Jafar Panahi’s Taxi.

Fury Road, which hits Blu-ray in the U.S. today, was a surprise hit over the summer, earning nearly unanimous positive reviews. Many have suggested that it should be in the running for major awards at the Oscars and this critics award could put it on the road to success.

Last year’s Grand Prix winner was Richard Linklater’s Boyhood, which did end up earning a Best Picture Oscar nomination. The 2013 winner was Blue Is The Warmest Color and eventual Best Picture nominee and Best Foreign Language Feature winner Amour won in 2012.
