Kim Davis, the Rowan County, Kentucky clerk who has continued to refuse to grant same-sex marriage licenses, has been found in contempt of court and jailed.

Davis gained national attention on Tuesday when she continued to refuse to issue licenses to same-sex couples even after the Supreme Court refused to overturn a federal judge’s decision that she must be forced to do so. On Wednesday, Davis, a born-again Apostolic Christian, filed another request for a court order to allow her to continue denying licenses on the basis of her religious beliefs.
However, today, U.S. District Judge David Bunning decided that fines were not enough to force her to comply with the law. According to the Courier-Journal, Bunning said that he feared that a ruling in her favor would set a dangerous precedent.
The court “cannot condone willful disobedience,” Bunning said. “If you give people opportunity to choose what orders they follow, that is what potentially causes problems.”
Davis continued to defend her beliefs, insisting that god’s power trumps the U.S. court rulings.
"My conscience will not allow it," Davis said, notes USA Today. "God's moral law convicts me and conflicts with my duties."
During the hearing, Bunning also warned other county clerks in Kentucky, since two other counties have also stopped granting marriage licenses to all couples.
