Donald Trump and the other candidates for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination will square off again next week in another debate, this time on CNN. Since the first debate was such a hit for Fox News, there’s been reports that CNN is seeing a boost in ad revenue and Trump knows exactly what the network should do with the money: donate it to veterans groups.
Trump posted an open letter to Zucker on Twitter, in which the real estate mogul writes that the proceeds should go to veterans, who are often “treated like third class citizens - even worse, in many cases, than illegal immigrants.”
He pointed out that last month’s Fox News debate drew over 24 million viewers. “While I refuse to brag, and as you know very well, this tremendous increase in viewer interest and advertising is due 100% to 'Donald J. Trump,’” Trump wrote.
Trump has suggested that CNN should pay him for doing the debate, since he has drawn so much attention to the race, over a year before the 2016 election.
“Jeff is a friend of mine, but if I didn't get ratings he would not have all Trump all the time," Trump recently told The Hollywood Reporter. "I kid him about it. He wants to do documentaries. I say, 'Jeff, I don't have time.' But when I go on, the meter jumps. He should pay me a fortune, right? They should all pay me for this. I'm doing this for nothing."
He also recently told Time Magazine that CNN should give the proceeds (that he assumes will be huge because of his presence) to charity.
“If I’m in it, they’ll get this crazy audience, and they’re going to make a fortune since they’re selling commercials every time we take a break,” Trump told Time. “Would you ever say to them, would you ever say, I want $10 million for AIDS research, for cancer, for this type or not, or is it too cute?”
CNN hasn’t responded to Trump’s letter. The debate is on Sept. 16.
