Cate Blanchett already has one Oscar for playing a Hollywood legend. Could she be looking for another? The Australian actress has signed on to star in a Lucille Ball biopic that’s approved by Ball’s children and written by Aaron Sorkin.
The news was first broken by TheWrap, which reports that it will center on Ball’s 20-year marriage to Desi Arnaz, her I Love Lucy co-star. The two had two children before their divorce in 1960. Their children, Lucy Arnaz and Desi Arnaz Jr will produce the film with Escape Artists, which is based at Sony.
It’s not clear when this project is supposed to start filming, as there’s no director attached. Blanchett doesn’t have many future projects lined-up, so she probably won’t have trouble fitting it in her schedule.
Blanchett has a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for playing Katharine Hepburn in Martin Scorsese’s The Aviator and won Best Actress for Woody Allen’s 2013 film Blue Jasmine. Her next film is Todd Haynes’ Carol, which is also earning awards chatter and hits theaters on Nov. 20.
She also stars in Truth, the Dan Rather biopic with Robert Redford that Sony Pictures Classics is releasing in October.
As for Sorkin, the Oscar-winning writer behind The Social Network wrote Danny Boyle’s Steve Jobs. That film hits theaters on Oct. 9.
Hopefully Blanchett looks closer to Ball than that horrific statue in New York.
