‘Star Wars’: Anthony Daniels compares George Lucas to JJ Abrams, takes a stab at prequels

Anthony Daniels is in rare company as one of the few actors to appear in all six Star Wars films, and now he’s about to be in his seventh. The British actor, who has played C-3PO since 1977, had a few things to say about his latest time inside the golden protocol droid.

In an interview with The Guardian this week, Daniels, 69, compared working with Star Wars creator George Lucas to working under the direction of J.J. Abrams. The Force Awakens is the first Star Wars film not directed by Lucas since Return of the Jedi.

“George has changed a lot over the years but I think he finds it slightly hard to collaborate,” Daniels told the Guardian. “He made decisions that I believe might have been better discussed with other people. JJ is more collaborative. He likes to listen.”

Since Daniels worked on the prequels as well, he immediately knew that The Force Awakens was going to be different because Abrams insisted on making a film that felt physical and real. The prequels were overloaded with CGI by comparison.

“It became clear early on that with JJ we were getting back to the old-fashioned kind of film-making,” Daniels said with glee. “We have walls. Actual sets! All right, so you might not have a view out of the window, but you have a window.”

Daniels also told the Guardian that Disney has been following his every move to make sure he doesn’t spill the beans about The Force Awakens. It’s apparently OK for Abrams to spill secrets to magazines, but it’s not OK for Daniels.

“The secrecy has been beyond ludicrous,” Daniels said. “For heaven’s sake, it’s a movie. When I got the script, it was typed in black on paper of the deepest red so you couldn’t photocopy it. I got a hangover just reading it.”

We’ll finally be able to see what Daniels was not allowed to talk about on Dec. 18 when The Force Awakens opens.
