4. The People Under the Stairs
Years after A Nightmare on Elm Street, Craven proved he had lots more in him with The People Under the Stairs, one of the most simultaneously fun and creepy horror films out there, like a nightmarish Home Alone. It follows a character who breaks into the house of his landlords to steal rent money, only to discover a bunch of pale children locked in the basement. Craven mixes humor and scares in a brilliant way, giving the whole thing a light tone of adventure but while never diminishing the terror of it all. It's one of the more enjoyable "creepy house" movies you'll ever see, and although not as flashy as something like Nightmare on Elm Street or Scream, it's definitely worth a second look.
