6. New Nightmare
After directing the horror masterpiece A Nightmare on Elm Street, Craven had very little involvement in the rest of the franchise, as New Line cranked out sequel after sequel without him. But as the series was dying out, Craven decided to return for one last outing, and he was able to send the franchise out on a hell of a high note. Before Scream, New Nightmare was one of the first meta horror movies, taking place in the real world and following the actual film crew that made A Nightmare on Elm Street. Yes, that means that Wes Craven himself is a character in the movie, played by the real Wes Craven. It's a brilliant idea which allows for some truly creative moments of Freddy in the "real" world, and Craven also manages to, after a bunch of downright silly installments, make Freddy scary again.
