2. A Nightmare on Elm Street
What can you say about A Nightmare on Elm Street? It's simply one of the greatest horror films ever made, certainly one of the greatest slashers, and it completely revolutionized 1980s horror. But despite the sequels becoming more comedic in nature, this original film is still downright terrifying, even though it has plenty of slasher cheese mixed in. Craven plays with primal fears a lot throughout his career, and in Nightmare, he really takes that to its logical conclusion, as with the horrifying staircase scene playing on the fear of not being able to run away from someone. Despite Freddy becoming more of an outspoken icon in the later movies, he actually barely says anything in this original, and he only has seven minutes of screen time. Craven's unique filmmaking tricks are also on display here, as in the brilliant blood geyser sequence and the gag of Freddy's arms stretching out using practical effects. Along with Halloween, A Nightmare on Elm Street is potentially the most important slasher film of all time, and it's hard to imagine any further remakes will be able to come close.
