3. The Punisher
The Past: Oh, what a long journey Frank Castle has been on. The man known as the Punisher debuted on the screen in the late 80s in a Dolph Lungren starring film that is probably everything you would expect with that kind of description. In 2004, Thomas Jane took the lead as the character opposite a laughable villain in John Travolta (yes, that John Travolta) which was met with “meehh” response. Four years later, Punisher: War Zone was released and is largely a forgotten about film and performed exceptionally low at the box office. Needless to say, the Punisher’s on screen reputation is pretty, um, awful.
Why He’s So Hard to Get Right: Frank Castle aka the Punisher is a merciless, cold blooded killer. It’s hard to make someone like that relatable or sympathetic. Hollywood has tried by making it about the loss of his family, which could work with the right talent involved. But the Punisher’s anti-hero qualities are just so hard to justify it’s harder to adapt him to the screen, not to mention he’s not the most well known character in Marvel’s line-up.
The Future: Punisher will return to the screen, but only the small screen, very soon in Netflix’s second season of Daredevil. He’ll be played by Walking Dead alum Jon Bernthal, who was a psychopath on that show, too.
