5. The Hulk
The Past: On the small screen, the Green Goliath enjoyed a four year long series starring Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno in the late 70s, early 80s. The big screen has been a different matter. Ang Lee tried his hand at the character in a pre-Avengers world that wasn’t your typical super hero film. We’re now accustomed to the fun and enjoyable Marvel Cinematic Universe, but Lee’s version, while unique, was too much of a slow burn drama pretending to be a super hero action movie.
Then Louis Leterrier took a crack at the character for a post-Iron Man Avengers tie-in in 2008, which now has a negative connotation of being the Marvel movie people forget about. Why? Well, none of the characters outside of the Hulk that were featured in a movie have popped up anywhere else, and even Bruce Banner/Hulk was recast for the Avengers films. That leads us to Joss Whedon’s Avengers, which is the closest we’ve gotten to seeing the character portrayed accurately on the big screen.
Why He’s So Hard to Get Right: The Hulk isn’t your typical super hero. He’s Bruce Banner, a brilliant scientist who turns into a raging monster when under emotional stress. He can’t control it, and the fact that the Hulk is such a loose cannon makes him hard to translate well onto the screen. Traditional super hero stories kind of go out the door when you’re dealing with a “super hero” that could tear apart an entire city because of a temper tantrum. The Avengers films are the closest to nailing the character, with actor Marc Ruffalo taking over the role of Banner, because they figured out how to use him in a team setting. But as far as solo films go, the Hulk just hasn’t had the best of luck.
The Future: It remains to be seen whether Marvel will ever trust the Hulk to carry his own solo adventure, but seeing as how Ruffalo has inhabited the character so well and has become a fan favorite, it would be a shame if they didn’t try. He’ll most likely next be seen in The Avengers: Infinity War-Part 1 in 2018.
