9. The Villains of the MCU
The Past: While Marvel is the king of super heroes at the moment, their villains are pretty weak. With the exception of Loki (and really, that’s only because Tom Hiddelston is a great actor), most of the villains featured in the Marvel Cinematic Universe are, to put it bluntly, pretty shitty. From Iron Man 2’s Whiplash to Thor: The Dark World’s Malekith these villains seem more like placeholders than actual characters. It’s a shame, because pretty much all of them have been played by A-list actors.
Why They’re So Hard to Get Right: When you’re building an entire universe, some things are bound to get lost along the way. It seems that thing for Marvel is the ability to make interesting antagonists. It’s mostly due to the fact that for most of these villains, their motivations aren’t made clear or it’s just that the rest of the characters are far more interesting. Take Guardians of the Galaxy for instance. Great movie, but nobody is exclaiming how great the villain was.
The Future: The really really big bad that Marvel has been teasing for years now will finally get his due in the next Avengers installments. Infinity War Parts 1 and 2 will give Thanos the spotlight, and if Marvel fucks that up, then the last seven years will basically be meaningless. Fingers crossed.
