2. Fantastic Four
The Past: Remember Tim Stoy’s 2005 Fantastic Four and its 2007 follow-up Rise of the Silver Surfer? Remember how god awful they were? Well, now there’s a reboot out you may have heard of (but probably haven’t seen). Believe it or not, this reboot, directed by Chronicle helmer Josh Trank, is apparently even more atrocious. Why They’re So Hard to Get Right: A really stretchy guy, a human fireball, a girl that turns invisible and a giant rock aren’t exactly easy to sell to an audience, especially if it doesn’t have the distinction of being a “Marvel’s” something. In this day and age of audiences being used to a Marvel property being, well, a Marvel property, it’s hard to find a way to care about super heroes that don’t fall into that cinematic universe. The X-Men movies are the exception, but that franchise was pumping out good movies long before Marvel even thought about bringing the Avengers together.
But more than that, the Fantastic Four have always seemed to be the outlier in the Marvel universe, even in the comics. They were Marvel’s first family, and maybe that honor is more of a curse—they can’t seem to catch up with the rest of the pack. Marvel even canceled all of their Fantastic Four comics, which was more of an eff you to 20th Century Fox than a sign of the title’s quality, but still. They can’t catch a break on the page or on the screen.
The Future: Well, considering the latest Fantastic Four is tanking both critically and financially, it remains to be seen what Fox will do with the franchise in the future. A sequel was already greenlit, and a crossover with the X-Men rumored, but the likelihood of any of that happening at this point is up in the air.
