Owen Wilson’s ‘No Escape’ starts with $1.2 million at box office

Even though there’s no holiday major holidays this weekend, The Weinstein Company opted to release the Owen Wilson thriller No Escape on Wednesday. The film only made $1.2 million during its first day, which was less than Straight Outta Compton, which has been out for two weeks already.

No Escape, which also stars Lake Bell and Pierce Brosnan, is about an American couple stuck in Southeast Asia when a coup breaks out. The film has earned mostly negative reviews from critics, but analysts still expect it to make around $10 million by Sunday, notes TheWrap.

Despite a new release to contend with, Straight Outta Compton won Wednesday with $2.1 million. According to Box Office Mojo, Universal’s N.W.A. biopic is now up to $118.9 million.

Compton will face off against two more wide releases this weekend. Warner Bros.’ We Are Your Friends with Zac Efron and Sony’s faith-based movie War Room open on Friday. Efron’s film will probably hit around $7 million, while War Room is looking for at least $5 million.

All that spells out is a third consecutive weekend win for Compton.
